Bastille Day is France's national day which is one of the greatest symbolic events of the French Revolution. The revolution also brought in a dropping of the wine prices. Wine, like other products, had been a subject to a series of taxes before the revolution. This led to the multiplying of bars outside the walls as well as a lot of wine smuggling into Paris.
After the revolution, government cut down the complex tax system and also made the wine transport from one part of France to another feasible and easy. This lowered down the prices of wine to a great extent and on May 1, 1791, two million litres of the cheap wine came to Paris, The revolutionaries tried to improve the quality by presenting medals to the grape growers of France. Time to enjoy drinking some good French wine!
